The weather is warming up, the evenings are getting lighter, and the Firesolve team are preparing for a busy season of training and advice. In this blog, we’ve put together some suggestions on how you can reduce the risk of fire in your workplace this summer.

Why Is Summer Dangerous?

For a fire to ignite, it requires all three elements of what is known as the fire triangle – oxygen, fuel, and heat. In the summer, the weather can cause extreme spikes in heat throughout the workplace, especially if you do not have air conditioning. Sunshine concentrated through a window, an overheating computer, or even an errant spark can be a huge risk to your people and premises. Oxygen and fuel are often readily available for a fire to consume in the average workplace, making heat a real danger.

Unplug Your Appliances

When not in use, your appliances should be turned off. When left on for extended periods of time, devices and motors can overheat or malfunction, potentially starting a fire. Plug-in air conditioning units are particularly prone to this, as are electrical fans; when used in moderation, they can make your workplace a more comfortable space during a heatwave, but please be careful not to over-use them.

Check Your Fire Safety Equipment!

If a fire does start, your fire safety equipment can help to tackle it and ensure that your staff can evacuate safely. Fire alarms should be tested weekly, and having fire extinguishers stationed throughout your premises ensures that smaller blazes can be effectively tackled. It may also be appropriate to supply fire blankets and a variety of extinguisher types.
